OpenSAF Poised for Strong Growth in 2009
Summary:
Foundation announces 2009 Officers, updated Roadmap and Developer Days 2009.

Danville, CA March 25, 2009 - The OpenSAF Foundation, a consortium of leading communications and computing companies supporting the OpenSAF project, today announced a successful conclusion to its inaugural year with a significant increase in developers, member companies and downloads of its software. The Foundation also announced the election of new Officers and plans for Developer Days 2009 in Shenzhen China.

Over two hundred individual contributions from dozens of contributors were made to the project since its beginning in 2008, showing strong support from many companies and individuals. General availability of Release 3.0 is on schedule for May 2009 and includes Information Model Management service, Notification service, Java  APIs, a simplified Linux-based build system and updated availability, logging, event, message, and check-pointing services. These enhancements provide standardization around manageability, enable a common high availability solution for C/C++ and Java environments, and accelerate the learning curve around using the code base.

"The OpenSAF project was very active in 2008, making Release 2.0 generally available and preparing for Release 3.0, which has significant new features", said Mario Angelic, technical co-chair of the OpenSAF project. "Looking forward, Release 4.0 will contain further enhancements including software management - seamless upgrade/downgrade, a critical feature for highly available systems. Developer days 2009 in Shenzhen on June 3rd and 4th will feature discussions on release 4.0 and future work on the project", he continued.

During 2008 four companies joined the OpenSAF Foundation: ENEA, Huawei, Rancore Technologies and Wind River Systems joined the Foundation as members adding significant developers and industry knowledge to the project.

"The community has responded very favorably to the concept of an open source high-availability middleware project, with significant growth in active OpenSAF developers, substantial additions to the code-base, and emergence of business-critical applications based on this middleware" said Alan Meyer, president of the OpenSAF Foundation. "Joining the OpenSAF Foundation provides members the benefit of collaborating with customers, partners and competitors in the expansion of the ecosystem through a range of marketing activities."
At the February 12th 2009 Annual General Meeting held in Phoenix Arizona member companies announced the election of a new board and new officers:

Technical co-chairs of the OpenSAF project; Mario Angelic of Ericsson and Jonas Arndt of HP

President of OpenSAF Foundation; Alan Meyer of HP

Following the success of Developer Days 2008, the Technical Leadership Council also announced the 2nd Developer Days 2009. Individuals interested in attending should complete the free registration form available at the OpenSAF website. Program details, registration forms, Visa information and logistics are available on line at http://www.opensaf.org/Developer-Days-2009~198529~14944.htm

OpenSAF Developer Days features sessions led by key technologists and architects from industry leaders and academia. Discussions will facilitate the exchange of ideas on the implementation of HA middleware, the OpenSAF Project roadmap, the sharing of experiences with community experts and details on joining and contributing to the project. The event features discussions aimed at developers who are interested in obtaining a general overview of the OpenSAF Project architecture and code base, as well as understanding more about SA Forum's specifications. Additional sessions will focus on developers and experts seeking detailed and practical exposure to the OpenSAF software and the development of OpenSAF based highly available applications.
